Why are Proteins so important?
Proteins are a crucial physiological molecule, involved in almost every process that happens in our bodies.
The major processes that protein fuels are:
1.Cellular metabolism (chemical reactions that happen in living organisms in order to maintain life within)
2.Sending messages within and between each and every cell
3.Enabling the important chemical reactions that happen every second in our bodies
4.Creating new structures and repairing old ones.
Proteins also make up most of our bodies tissues.
These tissues include:
4.Hair and Nails
5.Bone (a large percentage of bone structure is built from protein)
It also helps build and strengthen our immune system and many of our hormones, both male and female.
Our bodies are always building up proteins. This is referred to as Protein Synthesis. It’s also always breaking them down, known as protein turnover.
Because proteins have so many important roles to play in our bodies, and because they are always being deconstructed and reconstructed, we need to eat a consistent supply of dietary protein to live and thrive at our peak performance.
Your protein intake can come from many forms of sustenance and nutrition including meat, vegetables, eggs, protein powder (vegan, whey, casein, pea) and if needed, supplementation from scientifically created sources.
Every individual will require a slightly differing amount of protein.
How Much Protein do You Need?
Although we need a constant supply of dietary protein, the exact amount will invariably differ from person to person. Factors to consider when calculating your required protein intake include but are not limited to:
3.Your body size and lean mass
4.Your fitness and activity level
5.Your overall health status
6.Whether You’re pregnant or breastfeeding
7.Whether You’re injured or sick
Most people will benefit from eating relatively more protein than they do, unless of course there is a specific medical reason for drastically reducing your protein consumption.
If you’re struggling to get enough protein or aren’t sure where to start, you can email the team at Fortune Fitness: Powered by EC.PT and they will happily give you some guidance into the best way forward for you.
We train hard and eat clean because we love our bodies, not because we hate them! -EC.PT
